C-Cube Wins in Sony's Set-top Box for Canal+Satellite Pay TV Deployment
MILPITAS, Calif., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- C-Cube Microsystems (Nasdaq: CUBE - news) today announced Sony's (NYSE: SNE - news) selection of C-Cube's AViA@TV® silicon for a new generation of satellite television digital set-top boxes to be deployed by Canal+, Europe's largest pay TV provider.

``We are delighted that Sony chose C-Cube for its new MediaSat(TM) box for the Canal+ deployment,'' said Umesh Padval, C-Cube president and CEO. ``We look forward to extending our relationship with Sony to help develop its next-generation set-top boxes.''

The MediaSat boxes, which have passed compliance testing, will begin shipping in November. To date, Canal+ has deployed more than 4 million of the digital multimedia set-tops in Europe for its 13 million pay TV subscribers, most still users of analog set-tops as Canal+ continues to expand deployments of digital models.

Among other advanced capabilities, the AViA@TV's embedded high-performance CPU and multi-plane graphics provide easy user interfaces and allow Web content to be displayed on television.

``The Sony platform, based on the C-Cube chipset, has proven itself to be a technically superior solution and we are delighted to be able to offer it to our subscribers,'' said Jean-Francois Fremaux, vice president of Technology for the CANAL+ Group.

C-Cube's AViA@TV MPEG-2 decoder offers the following advanced features:

* Integrated 100-MHz microSPARC(TM) CPU with 8K/2K cache
* High-performance graphics engine with:
-- Flicker Filter(TM) for the display of web content on television
-- Seven planes for rich graphical interfaces
-- 24-bit true color
