Dear Scumbria:

My family runs Linux on eight different computers. Only one is an Intel machine (a lowly P133 with 256MB SDRAM) and the rest are AMDs, three are on Soyo motherboards, 1 on an ASUS, 2 on Epox, and the last on a Supermicro. There are no problems finding an active modem (turned on when Linux boots) The reason for this is the automatic configurers on the newer versions reconfigure based on what they see during bootup. That includes laser printers on hot standby (HP LaserJet 6L has this problem sometimes), modems, external disk and tape drives, scanners, etc. There are ways to force the configurator to act as if it found the devices any way.

No, Scumbria, whoever told you that AMD based motherboards are not perfectly usable under Linux is sadly mistaken. Take my word for it as I write device drivers for Linux and UNIX systems of various flavors and have used Linux for many years.

Pete
