i find it interesting that Haig is most remembered and often criticised for that (i am in charge) line. our country was in total turmoil. for a few moments, Haig stepped to the plate and provided a leadership figure head to focus on.

My take on it is that his comment was an additional symptom of the turmoil on display. At a time that we needed stabile leadership, his comment helped increase the perception of of the leadership's instability. People who are willing to step up to the plate need to know when it's best not to take that step.

I think it can be especially difficult for a military career person to transition to a highly visible civilian position, but Haig wasn't in charge and shouldn't have said that he was. Despite that understandable difficulty, the one thing a military person should easily recognize is the chain of command. Yet Haig didn't.
