No doubt it's somewhat age related, but I just can't see PC's primarily as a source of entertainment akin to my sound system and TV/DVD combo. I received Dell's catalog a few days ago and the appearance of stylized cases is kinda neat but THX certified sound systems and P4 chips at high prices for the sake of watching movies on a screen inferior to real entertainment gear I bought for that purpose is beyond comprehension IMVHO. OTOH, Dell's catalog is a masterpiece of temptation right down to the ridiculously low base prices on P4 systems that must be stripped as hell. I didn't check the configurations but from what I've read I'd guess the base prices are akin to base prices on American cars and serve the same purpose. If there is to be a marriage between PC's and the rest of the electronic entertainment world it seems to me it will have to occur at much less than the price of a P4 system. And when real work is to be done at the machine a much cheaper/faster Athlon will be considerably more attractive than the strange concoction Intel/Dell have created.

PS. Having ranted briefly I must admit to having a nephew in med school who recently told me that he uses his computer mostly for listening to music!!! Fortunately his parents had the good sense to send him off to school with an AMD computer, but if he ever suggests he needs a Dell/P4 or it's equivalent because it sounds better then we are in real trouble.
