The idea behind RF direct to Baseband has been around for a long time and has been used in other digital communications standards. It is more difficult to implement in cdma and therefore I see today's PR as a VERY significant engineering accomplishment. I have long been under the assumption that Q will integrate as much of the phone hardware as possible into their MSM products. Not much different than the strategy employed by Intel over the last 5 years. There are plenty of other components that will also go away in the future. For example, the current MSM's only have the digital portion of Bluetooth on chip. A Bluetooth radio would still be required to complete the function. If Bluetooth takes off in the coming years, I would think that this could be another integration/cost reduction step. I do wonder however, why Q chose to announce the ZIF feature today when the samples are close to a year away. I've always respected Q's conservative technology and fiscal guidance in the past. It seems to me that CTIA in Feb '01 would have been a more appropriate time and place. MicroE
