That article makes no sense.
I visited a Micro Center store today (in Westmont Illinois) and they had a stack of 4 P4 systems on the floor, boxed up and ready to go. The sign showed a price cut from 2,199 to 1,999 - the stack looked untouched, they don't appear to be selling them at all, but maybe they just re-arranged the display.
I can't imagine what's up with dell. I saw a P4 on display at a circuit city store over the weekend, it was listed as being on sale, too. No "last one" sign so I doubt there weren't any left.
If Dell is having trouble keeping these systems in stock, they're the only ones.

PS - I stopped by a nearby screwdriver shop to ask if they'd heard anything about the Iwill 266R (DDR board, Ali chipset) or the PCChips 810LMR (integrated SiS chipset). They hadn't heard of the Iwill board, but I was handed an 810LMR! (Which I bought!)
The integrated boards are here! They are seriously here! This shop was not a leading edge vendor. The board includes on board integrated video with resolution up to 1920x1200 at 16M colors, integrated 10/100 ethernet, integrated hardware DVD, supports 266MHZ FSB Athlons, has onboard modem, ATA 100 IDE, onboard sound, and cost $95 from a guy who buys from a distributor! It includes Wordperfect Suite 8 on the driver CD!
Stick a Duron on one of these and you have a P3 killer! Celeron isn't even worth discussing.
SiS boards are often a little iffy when they first come out, so I'll see how it goes. I'll be playing with it over the holidays (and I'll also pick up an Iwill board, if I can find one) |
