<<I was hiking the GW National Forest once, and walked up on a Black Bear. >>

My mother's third cousin and her one armed husband were the first civilians to drive the Alcan highway to Alaska. They took a motorhome (this was in the 50s)pulling a Jeep. They had 2 spares for every tire on the ground and carried 100 gallons of "emergency" gas.

They had permission to film on Kodiak Island. Regulations at that time required them to take two armed soldiers for protection. One night a Kodiak/Grizzly/Brown came into camp and was tearing up supplies. Instead of letting the soldiers shoot the bear she started walking up to it, cussing it out. Ran that bear out of camp. In those days the bears hadn't been exposed to people. I hear on Kodiak now a shot during deer season is a bear call.
