Eeeek. I can't think of anything dumber under the circumstances than appointing someone directly from the Senate. Dubya is going to want to appoint textualists, I assume, and there's no way to tell whether a judge is really a textualist except to read the body of that judge's opinions developed over time.

I can't remember the last time someone was elevated to the Supreme Court bench without doing a stretch as a judge. Clarence Thomas did a brief stint on the D.C. Court of Appeals.

I can't remember any opinions that Judge Jones has written but my recollection from when I was down in Louisiana was that she was good, I mean, conservative. She believes in federalism.

I like Senator Fred Thompson. Orrin Hatch is scary. I can easily see him presiding over the Salem Witch Trials. His geniality is only skin deep.
