Picked up both Ladies and Gentlemen and So Many Roads this week, found some good prices on both these two fat boys.
Got to say, two of the best - sound quality mostly better than the DPs I've heard too.
After only one full listening of both, I disagree with this reviewer - I think Ladies and... kicks 'em all. Fits together a bit more coherently than the patchwork of So Many too. 'Course, I'm biased toward this period. A steal at $25.
It has the burnin' Hard to Handle and Alligator jams that I've got on tape, but some of the other versions are different than the ones I had already (mostly equally good). Takes awhile though to get used to the different mix - the bass is downplayed a bit on the CD (revenge on Phil ?), and Weir's amped a little higher (maybe too much).
Still and all, the article had it right about L&G on this ---
(With Pigpen gone, and his roster of tunes gone with him, Garcia would never quite sound as continuously menacing — as gloriously, penetratingly sinister — again.)
