I wouldn't worry about 'ol Orrin. One totally bi-partisan pre-req will be that the justice can be expected to serve a couple decades. Regarding judges as sole qualifiers, considering the extensive damage that the Supreme Court can do to the republic, I am sympathetic to both term limits and a requirement that at least one third have a background outside the legal practice. We just asked the Court to step in front of an attempted coup by totalitarians, and they obliged. They might have had an even easier time of it with input from people whose career experience had been in the real world. Regarding Shaq, he overcame a massive and under-recognized handicap: fame, fortune, and the demands on one's time that that brings. He is a giant among his peers now in more ways than talent and size...
