Electro Scientific Industries (ESIO:Nasdaq - news), a maker of products used in electronics manufacturing, reported earnings for the second quarter that beat Wall Street's expectations.

The company, which is based in Portland, Ore., said it earned $27 million, or $1 a share, in the quarter, up from $6.9 million, or 26 cents a share, in the year-ago period.

Analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial expected Electro Scientific to earn 87 cents a share. Sales rose to $139.6 million from $66.9 million in the same period last year.
