There was a guy hiking at Eagle River (north of Anchorage) a few years ago who encountered a black bear, so he got on the ground and played dead. The bear sauntered up and started chewing the guy's rump. The guy let out a yelp and the bear took off. I figure the guy was a Nader voter.

When a bear gets obstreperous with me I just pull out my Alaska driver's license and say "Halt! Official government business!". This usually works. However, I pack a 12-gauge with 00 buckshot just in case the bear can't read. <g>
