Paul, the Sun article about their cache ECC problem, makes it sound like they have a fix (mirrored cache) for Ultrasparc II boxes. I thought they had blown off USII and were only fixing it on USIII boxes. Could be wrong. Right off the top, a mirrored cache is something they can "bolt on", and not have to tear up their cache control logic by doing it right with Hamming type ECC. Problem with the bolt on approach they selected is that, if you get a particle hit that causes a soft error, it probably takes a relatively long time to go over to the mirror copy and run with it. During that interim, it's possible for other things to go wrong and really take them down an ugly path. Maybe something like swerving to avoid an animal in the road, but requiring someone in the back seat to do it.

Oh well, my imagination doth runeth away sometimes.
