Most geology courses teach how to spot salting and procedures taken to prevent it and expose it if suspected, as often a geologist is brought in to examine a discovery and he must place his rep on line and so he/she will take proper fresh samples from undisturbed areas,
drill new holes/wedge the old ones etc, and in general take due diligence precautions prior to putting his name to the report.A lot of dumb promoters would try foolish stuff that was easy to detect in the old days, now they are cunning and often employ corrupt geologists of their own to do the salting, so it is done good and proper. Salting the core with soluble gold is usually prevented by a good washing. Solid core is hard to salt(except by drilling pin holes and inserting high grade ore, and then sealing with cement paste(it has been done)) and so it has a higher credibility. Then there is core substitution. If you have drilled one good hole and ten duds, then redrill at the good hole 3-5 times(a few feet away) and get all the core and replace the core from a few duds with your good hole core. Voila you now have 5 good holes and 5 duds, a good exploratory average. You must have a compliant driller, as he is sure to suspect, but he will be at his brokers anyway, buying stock. Unscrupulous promoters will drill a good hole and then a bad one, good, bad, through several cycles, bying and selling in counterpoise to the drill data, and profiting mightily. Ah the good old days. You cannot get away with that any more.
