re: Really beautifully illustrated classics, read aloud fun stuff.

This immediately suggests the perfect book for CW....or maybe two books:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and The Curse of Lono, both by Hunter Thompson and illustrated by Ralph Steadman.

"We were somewhere near Barstow on the edge of desert when the drugs began to take hold...." Truly one of the classic first lines. And excellent reading-out-loud for the whole family.

Then there's the Destroyer novels by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir. The back cover of each one is jammed with puns. Some of them match Alex's worst for both brevity and density (Look for #42, Timber Line). Check your used bookstore for these. If you happen to find any of the first ten, I'll buy them from you. Not your typical assassin books, these are hilarious farces with thinly disguised characters from current events.

For seriously *vivid* writing, try Hyperion by Daniel Simmons. It's a sort of much-latter-day Chaucer.

The Amazon website is a great place to read more about these and related books.
