Krispy Kreme Opens Long-Awaited San Diego Store; The Holidays Just Got a Lot Sweeter

Business Wire - December 19, 2000 11:00

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 19, 2000--Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. (Nasdaq:KREM) today announced the opening of its much-anticipated first San Diego location.

Doughnut lovers from all over San Diego lined up at the new store, located at 4180 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. in the Clairemont Town Square, to get dozens of the hot, fresh Krispy Kreme Original Glazed Doughnuts.

In true Krispy Kreme tradition, the newest location boasts the neon "Hot Doughnuts Now(R)" sign, which tells hungry customers that the celebrated, hot doughnuts are being made right in front of their eyes. The store offers 24-hour drive-thru service daily, and counter service from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., Friday and Saturday.

"Residents of San Diego have been waiting for their own Krispy Kreme store since we opened our first store in Southern California," said Harry Heyligers, general manager of the new store. "We are proud to announce the opening of our newest location to the loyal, and patient, members of the San Diego community."

"Many San Diegans, tempted by their craving for dozens of hot, fresh Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, have been traveling to our Orange County stores," said Roger Glickman, president of Great Circle Family Foods, the exclusive Southern California franchisee for Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. "Now, when the craving strikes, San Diego residents have their own neighborhood store!"

Krispy Kreme is dedicated to supporting its communities. Local organizations can benefit from successful fundraising partnerships, product donations and local involvement with schools, and religious and community organizations.

Krispy Kreme made its debut in Southern California last year with the introduction of its La Habra store in January 1999. Following that store, nine additional stores have opened in Van Nuys, Orange, Ontario, Huntington Park, Long Beach, Gardena, Los Angeles, Bakersfield and today in San Diego.

Great Circle Family Foods LLC (GCFF), a Los-Angeles based company, is the exclusive franchisee for Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Southern California and the recipient of the 2000 Krispy Kreme Area Developer of the Year Award.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts was founded in Winston-Salem, N.C. in 1937 and quickly became a Southern tradition. Today, Krispy Kreme has more than 170 stores in 28 states. An estimated 3.5 million Krispy Kreme doughnuts are sold every day and more than 1.3 billion are sold each year. For more information about Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, visit www.krispykreme.com.
