I agree with you that the PVR capability best resides on the headend (or at some reasonable intermediate point between the STB and the origination of content). So if this is so obvious to a neophyte like myself, I have to assume that smarter people than I are working on that solution. Is there anyone out there showing an end to end solution - so storage to streaming - that can operate without significant memory cache at the STB?

The (or at least one) tricky part would seem to be the VCR like controls - stop, pause, slow motion - operated via the STB but with the actual function residing on a remote server. Enabling that with multiple streams would seem problematic.

Any thoughts or information?
