Once in Mammoth CA in the middle of the night we woke to the ususal trashcan assault of one of the local bears. This got the attention of our two cats in the condo and when we opened the patio door they ventured out to look. When the bear stood up in the dumpster these guys took off like they'd seen a ghost. Even from across the parking lot he was large and scary to our little "fur" kids.

Camping in Yosemite we once came upon a mother and cub just yards away uphill from us. My wife was sort of spooked and started to run but quickly stopped. Pulled a muscle or something and I couldn't help laughing. She got mad, and of course mothers and cubs can be dangerous, but we were on a road and not between them.

In the same campground at night some campers would set their chairs up in front of the dumpsters and wait for the bears to show. Picture taking and noise-making would follow. It was bizarre.

At Jackson Hole, someone in our group got a video of a grizzly at full run. It was impressive how fast they were.
