SMTR and 3DM....

With regard to 3DM, I think it will be a long while before they are able to put a Transense based SAW device "into" (read as molded into the hub or rim) the structure of a composite wheel. The engineering alone will take a while to figure out.

Then there is the whole RF (Radio Frequency) side of the equation. OK, assume for the moment 3DM masters how to integrate a Transense based SAW device "into" the structure of a composite wheel. There has to be some method of getting the pressure/temperature information from the SAW device in the wheel to an information read-out for the driver. Who has the lead in this RF technology? SMTR.

Then even if 3DM masters both these steps, it has to prove to auto OEM's that it's new composite wheels will work. The OEM's are so risk averse it will take quite a long time for them to accept a new product such as composite wheels. Then there is the whole cost issue of steel/aluminum vs. composites which I am not able to address.

As for your other comment "...I still don't see anything (other than the new US legislation) that is markedly different from what I saw 5 years ago...", I would direct you to the Honeywell Preliminary Agreement Announcement ( biz.yahoo.com ), the Michelin TRW announcement ( businesswire.com ).

I would also encourage you to go to knowentry.com and read through the information there.

Later...Klingerg
