Taiwan Semi Says 1H '01 Foundry Demand Won't Equal '00
TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Market demand for chip foundry services in the first two quarters of 2001 won't equal demand this year, said a Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. official late Tuesday.
Capacity utilization "will not be 100%" in the first quarter of next year, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity. The impact on profits isn't yet clear because pricing is still unknown, said the official.

Capacity utilization throughout 2000 was at or very near 100%. Taiwan Semiconductor is the world's largest pure contract manufacturer of microchips.

Demand for the third quarter next year is also unclear because it's so far down the road, added the official.
