ed- you raise a good point, but my issue with federal gvt. debt...its way too easy for the average Joe to forget about its existence, and, if our Congress starts thinking in the way you suggest...we'll never get our debt under control...after all, the consequences of large gvt. debt are insidious, eating us up from the inside out...
Personal debt hits closer to home, and the individual is more prone to act, IMO, because one feels the effects quicker (warning bills, bankruptcies, etc)..
Honestly, I see debt (personal/government) as as big a security issue as any our country faces....we should, as a country, do more to educate (from grade school) kids how to be financially responsible and knowledgable about financial history....I can hardly think of a more important issue for our country's future...without more education, we'll always be stuck with these dangerous problems...
Of course, I also support everyone having to take a 12 month course and get a licence before having a kid (going strongly against my libertarian tendencies), so what do I know? |
