Scientific discoveries are not motivated by fear.
Even in academic circles the pace of discovery is accelerated by the fear of being second, not first with the new idea. It is quite rare for a researcher to be so far beyond the peer group that no sense of urgency is experienced. In commercial R&D the goals become even more closely tied to the goals of the competitian.
