I've had a change of heart the last week.

Immediately after the election, I was vehemently opposed to hand recounts due to the fact they were an invitation to abuse and that I felt the handling of the ballots would change the votes.

But my positioned softened and I came to accept that a hanging chad should be counted as a vote because the only difference was that the chad didn't fall away.

But now I am back to my original stand that no hand recounts should count. The reason? The words of Sandra Day O'Conner when she said that the standard that existed on election day was the instructions to voters as they entered the booth. Those instructions say to check your ballot for paper chips hanging from the back. No other standard should be accepted.

In my state, we use punch cards too. I always look at the ballot before I put it in the sleeve and drop it in the box. Anyone who's too stupid to not follow instructions deserves to have their vote disregarded. I don't feel sorry for people who speed and get in a wreck, and I don't feel sorry for someone who gets drunk and falls off a roof.

Maybe this whole fiasco will usher in a new era of personal responsibility. I know, that's dreaming.
