Both of these issues are handled to my satisfaction with a private version of BrowseMaster that I made for my own use. SI already remembers where I stopped reading a thread (not sure how this is done, as it's done from your end), and there is a configuration to select how many messages are too many to include with the one-click get all unread messages. Would be easier to have you try out the program than explain it to you, actually.
