NORTEL NETWORKS: Nortel Networks to build high-performance optical Internet for KDDI Japan; Will empower customers with Japan's first domestic 1.6 Terabit
'Speed of Light'
DEC 20, 2000, M2 Communications - TOKYO -- KDDI (www.kddi.com), one of Japan's largest telecommunications carriers, has selected Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT] to supply a high-performance Optical Internet solution that will enhance the capabilities of its nationwide backbone network and create an industry-leading platform for delivery of high-speed Internet access, multimedia services and IP-based VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) to customers across Japan.

KDDI will deploy Japan's first domestic network based on Nortel Networks OPTera* Long Haul 1600 Optical Line System, a multiservice, ultra-high capacity, 10-gigabit dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) solution. OPTera Long Haul 1600 will allow KDDI to consolidate the nationwide network created by the merger of carriers DDI, IDO and KDDI in October of this year.

"KDDI is committed to blazing new trails in Japan with next generation mobile and IP (Internet Protocol) services delivered over a cutting-edge optical network based on the highest standards of global technology," said Kaoru Tachibana, managing director, KDDI. "The remarkable speed, capacity and reliability of Nortel Networks OPTera will differentiate KDDI from its competitors by making it possible for us to offer our customers such superior communications services as high-speed Internet access, multimedia services and IP-based virtual private networks."

"Nortel Networks industry-leading Optical Internet solutions provide unprecedented capacity per fiber for applications like eBusiness and multimedia transmission, and this will support KDDI in bringing new, profitable services to their customers at lower operating costs," said Norio Murakami, president, Nortel Networks Japan. "We are delighted Nortel Networks has been selected to support this next strategic step in KDDI's evolution. It represents a significant milestone in bringing the all-optical, high-performance Internet to Japan."

Nortel Networks OPTera Long Haul 1600 is capable of delivering up to 1.6 terabits per second per fiber with up to 160 wavelengths at 10 gigabits per second. This enables up to 28 million simultaneous Internet connections on a single strand of fiber. Compared with 2.5-gigabit technology, the Nortel Networks 10-gigabit solution uses a simplified network configuration, resulting in higher reliability and enabling higher profitability.

Nortel Networks ranks number one in long haul DWDM, metropolitan DWDM and SONET/SDH market share, according to a recent report by the Dell'Oro Group, an industry research firm. The report also shows that Nortel Networks has expanded its Optical Internet leadership position with 43.2 percent of the overall optical transport market, almost 12 percent more than the same period last year. Nortel Networks optical backbones carry 75 percent of North America's Internet traffic and 50 percent of Europe's, according to RHK and the Yankee Group.

Nortel Networks is a global Internet and communications leader with capabilities spanning Optical, Wireless, Local Internet and eBusiness. The Company had 1999 U.S. GAAP revenues of US$21.3 billion and serves carrier, service provider and enterprise customers globally. Today, Nortel Networks is creating a high-performance Internet that is more reliable and faster than ever before. It is redefining the economics and quality of networking and the Internet, promising a new era of collaboration, communications and commerce. Visit us at www.nortelnetworks.com.
