From The Economist, 1216 issue, on page 79, at the end of a long article about telecoms:
____

(condensed)

Mr. Bruneau from Adventis, a telecoms consultancy, believes that over the next 2-5 years "bandwidth will be equalized to the door." This will lead to a wave of innovation.

Mr. Mines, a senior analyst with Forrester Research, thinks that new providers laying fibre in the city streets and using a disruptive technology known as "Gigabyte Ethernet", such as Yipes, Telseon, and Looking Glass will break the bandwidth bottleneck.
_____

What is the Gigabyte Ethernet, anyway?

If this halfway reasonable in estimation, maybe the cable companies will find their networks worth less. They need to get something going now to squeeze out these new providers before they get going.
