Defence against possible attack or blackmail with ballistic missles, is the primary benefit and real reason for the defence. There would be lesser secondary benefits but they would not be enough to justify a large program.

Who is the evil foe that's going to attack us....Estonia? I heard they had major missle silos outside of Tallin. I mean, give a break; we rule the world, its ours for the taking.

To spend billions on more defense is ludicrous imo.
