Dell Cuts Prices of Some Notebooks 20 Percent

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. (NasdaqNM:DELL - news), the leading direct computer systems company, said on Wednesday it had cut U.S. prices on some corporate notebook computers by 20 percent, firing the latest shot in a looming computer price war.

Dell cut the price of its Latitude CS Ultramobile notebook by 20 percent and dropped prices on higher end notebooks as well, saying the reductions were possible due to lower component prices.

The Round Rock-Texas-based firm follows a line of major personal computer makers that have introduced programs to improve unexpectedly low sales before the Christmas season ends.

But Dell's cut of the Latitude was one of the first aimed at corporate clients and in the notebook arena.

The company's stock closed down $1-5/8, nearly 9 percent, to $16-5/8 in Wednesday trading on Nasdaq.
