Alzheimer's disease: Vaccination in a mouse model

A vaccine against Alzheimer's disease in humans is a long way off, but work reported this week shows that it could be a goal worth pursuing. Alzheimer's is characterized by the build-up of plaques of insoluble amyloid-beta (Ab) peptide in the brain. Using a new experimental protocol, researchers now show that, in mice genetically engineered to develop a form of Alzheimer's, the build up of plaques with age correlates with cognitive decline, a relationship that had until now eluded researchers. Furthermore, two groups report that a vaccination with Ab protects mice with Alzheimer's like pathology both from building up plaques and the loss of memory and learning ability associated with the progression of the disease.
