An interesting feature on NPR last night, about a Chinese smuggler who is being held in Canada - he is wanted for extradition, probably because he knows who in China was involved and is therefore dangerous - he imported so much oil that it lowered the price in China!

Naturally, such men are dangerous, and must be stopped!

As a graduate student studying Louisiana history, one of the things I learned was that the ties between Louisiana and France (and Spain) were weakened because the mercantile system was no competition for the Kaintucks coming downriver in their dugouts full of embargoed goods like flour which was ground somewhere other than the mills that paid royalties to the king (later Emperor).

Freedom is great when it means throwing off the yokes of kings or emperors - and unfortunately for many it seems to stop there.
