The Kaintucks were these long-boned Yankee guys wearing buckskins and toting long rifles, that lived upriver quite a ways from New Orleans. Some of them lived in a place later named Kentucky.

Louisiana was supposed to be a captive market for the French industries- that was the theory of mercantilism, the colonies supplied the mother country with the raw materials and then the mother country supplied the colonies with finished goods. Unfortunately there was this really long lag time, due to the inefficiencies of transporting goods via sailboats, and then there were the inevitable wars that disrupted trade. And even worse, from the perspective of the consumer, were the tariffs.

Smuggling sounds scandalous, but it's really the free market in action.
