The Chinese cannot get off the aggression hook simply by blaming the numerous foreign peoples who have conquered them from time to time. Many aggressors in history have been foreigners who have seized power in societies that have been too weak or divided to provide leadership for themselves. Hitler was Austrian. Stalin was Georgian. Napoleon was Corsican. It may be, of course, that the Chinese are inherently too placid and quiescent to provide their own aggressiveness, but the Chinese Communist Party is actually an externally indoctrinated internal proletariat that has seized power, rather than a naturally evolved, tradition-based local dynasty. That such a future based doctrine should attempt to expand its borders through subversion and warfare is hardly surprising or unexpected. The attempt to regain Taiwan which has never been fully integrated into any previous Chinese empire is doomed to failure, possibly bloody failure. It seems much more likely to me that Taiwan will reconquer the mainland by internal subversion and investment than that a brutal, mismanaged, and panicky mainland will conquer Taiwan.
