Many of them were probably stoned <g>.

Being a little older I have a different memory. I remember buying stuff as soon as you got your paycheck, because you knew the same item would be more expensive in a week or a month. Saving money was foolish, it was a declining commodity. It was difficult to save for a big purchase like a downpayment on a house, a dollar you put away today was worth 88 cents a year later. If you wanted to buy something significant like a TV, do it today, because the TV would be more expensive next month.

Almost exactly opposite of recent times. Now you might put off a TV purchase on the expectation that the price would be cheaper and the TV would have more features in the future.
