Irvine, California-based Broadcom was on track to reach the goal of $1 billion in annual sales as a public company in 2000, 10 years faster than chip giant Intel Corp. did.

Among all of the U.S. companies that went public in 1998, Broadcom ranked fifth in performance, with a return of 1,657 percent as of Monday.

Analysts are betting on Nicholas. ''You're going to tend to see a limited number of companies out there doing extremely well, and Broadcom will be one of them,'' said Joseph Osha of Merrill Lynch & Co., who rates Broadcom shares a long-term buy. Twenty of the 22 analysts who follow Broadcom rate it a buy.

Osha said Broadcom will shine because telecommunications equipment makers are likely to buy more chips from outside vendors rather than develop their own and because Broadcom's engineers have shown they can deliver.

And industry powerhouse Intel is watching Broadcom's every move.
