It may be that higher volume was due to day trading including multiple trades per day. Perhaps it was trades from overseas. I don't really know. From personal experience, the people I know that didn't get into the market two or three years ago, did not decide they needed to get into the market this year (or the end of last). Most of the people I know that are really hurting were habitually on margin, and often incurred margin debt for purchases of cars and the like. Most of my pain was caused by selling puts on beaten down stocks, only to have them put to me and beaten down much further. Ouch! TP
