By Total Telecom staff

20 December 2000

China Mobile has awarded two GSM network contracts worth a total of US$102 million to Global Telecom Solutions Sector, part of U.S.-based vendor Motorola.

One contract is for the construction of a GSM 1800 network in Sichuan Province, while the second is for the expansion of an existing GSM 900/1800 network in Fujian Province.

The Sichuan network is scheduled for completion in third-quarter 2001, when it will have capacity for up to 531,160 subscribers, said Motorola in a statement.

The expansion of the Fujian network is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of next year, and will raise the number of potential subscribers to 1.31 million from 580,000.

Fujian and Sichuan have a combined 5.7 million mobile subscribers. Both GSM contracts were awarded to Motorola through Eastern Communications Company, which has licensing and joint venture agreements with the U.S. vendor.
