John,
Microsoft consistently does two things. One, it conservatively guides analysts on earnings in order to prevent missing estimates. Two, it socks away huge amounts of revenue every quarter as deferred earnings. The deferred revenue does not show up in the earnings per share. This gives Microsoft a great deal of flexibility in deciding how to report earnings. Although I don't have any first hand knowledge of Office 97 sales, I think that Office 97 will continue to sell in huge volumes. Remember that Win95 profits really kicked in the quarter after its first on the market. NT continues to serve as an alternative upgrade to Win95 which provides even more revenue to Microsoft.

I work at Microsoft, and I've sold way too many options way too soon. At this point, I'm planning to put an end to my selling, period.

Mike
