Bill, My criticism of Greenspan is that he is quick to make pre-emptive moves when the economy is booming and fails to realize he should have been doing the same when the economy started softening in the past couple of months.

The FED seems too slow to recognize sharp downturns in the economy. So many ex FED members and economists felt they should have moved to lower rates on Tuesday; that is the most criticism they have received in a long time.

I think Larry Kudlow is right..too many Philips curve followers on the FED. They are too rigid in their beliefs.

I also think many of these people still consider the USA economy in isolation and fail to see how the international economies affect the job markets and the inflation picture.
I think Greenspan has now seen enough and will be quicked to respond in the years to come. Maybe he is still learning and that is what makes him somewhat less than brilliant.
