Here's one view of the question, from the SNAP 1996 annual report: "Patent law as it relates to inventions in the biotechnology field is still evolving, and involves complex legal and factual questions for which legal principles are not firmly established."

Regarding the statement that 'Microcide and their partners reportedly have "the largest dedicated antibiotic research effort in the world,"'
something like this statement appears in MCDE's annual report :

"Microcide today, together with its corporate partners, is engaged in the largest antibiotic research and development effort in the world."

To anyone: surely, resistant bacteria such as those targeted by MCDE are an obvious focus area, and have been for years (the recent "news" about resistant strains is hardly unexpected). What other major efforts are under way in this area? What is the competition?

Here is one (follow link and search for "staph"), which seems to be in pretty early stages.
