LG Moving to Take Over Stake in Korea Telecom

LG Group said yesterday that it would likely take over part of government- owned
Korea Telecom during its privatization process in 2002.

``The group is considering buying stakes of Korea Telecom,'' said a senior LG official
on condition of anonymity, ``This would help the group attract foreign investment in
the form of strategic alliances with such firms as British Telecom (BT).''

The nation's third largest conglomerate is now faced with redefining its core business
directions _ third-generation wireless telecommunication and digital satellite
broadcasting.

``Although LG has decided not to apply for the synchronous mode IMT-2000 service
license early next year, it will not give up on its telecom business,'' he added.

Industry observers said that LG, as a result of its defeat in bidding for the IMT-2000
and satellite broadcasting licenses and its tight cash-flow situation, would face an
uphill battle.

They also said that the group could decide to let go of long-distance and international
call operator Dacom and broadband service provider Hanaro Telecom as well,
concentrating instead on manufacturing with LG Electronics.
