and those who just scramble to prevent Nazis and fascists from winning....

And just how were these people supposed to oppose the Nazis without joining the Maquis, or other organized resistance forces?

The Gestapo, SD, and SS were particularly effective in eliminating most organized resistance groups, the Maquis being one of the few exceptions. The Dutch resistance, for example, were almost completely penetrated and most british SOE advisors captured as a result.

One other aspect that is being overlooked about Nazism, was that it was seen as a bastion against Marxism. And unfortunately for them, many Jews were heavily involved in the Communist and Socialist movements, both in Europe and Russia. That naturallly made them targets of the Nazis on that front, and also because other Jews were perceived as the bankers. Any excuse to hate the Jews, communist and capitalist...

Btw, Zionists were heavily influenced by Socialist ideology, hence the communal Kibbutz farm.

And a bit of trivia, which nation was the first to recognize the newly formed state of Israel in 1948?
