I've always felt like I had overdrive (sort of) but know I do not. It felt like there was a shifting of sorts, at 50 or 55 mph. I thought I could hear a down shifting to lower rpm. Never did understand what it was, but that sound/feeling is now gone.

that was the torque converter locking up...he must have disconnected something. Most auto transmissions have a locking torque converter that will "lock" at a certain speed (the volvo does it around 45...my jeep around 50 or so) and become a direct drive to the wheels. You can hear/feel it and see the rpm drop slightly as in engages so it feels like overdrive.
