We may be in Recession now.

We May Be In Recession Now Industrial Production And Retail Sales Declining While most economists still believe that the economy is in a soft landing mode it is entirely possible that we may be in a recession now. Retail sales were flat in October and down 0.4% in November while industrial production was down in both months. Notice that we are not talking about a lower rate of growth here, but about an actual decline in two important segments that cover a lot of the economy. When we consider the rise in unemployment claims, announced cuts in capital spending and the constant barrage of corporate revenue and earnings warnings, the possibility of recession becomes even greater. In this connection we think that the statements issued by UPS and FedEx stand out because of the distinctive position these two companies occupy in the economy. UPS said that its shipments were flat in the first two weeks of December, compared to increases of 4% in October and November.
