Dr J very well stated I agree 100% on --Office 97 is entrenched,-- and --Do you really believe "...that the faster program loading, more responsive screen redraws, less memory and hard drive consumption will make Suite 8 the Suite of choice"? --
But Office 97 has one big flaw and that's BIG not small. File compatability (old word will not work on word 97) but MS is releasing a patch for it. Aha a fix you say. Why would they want to fix this problem. Corprate greed and that's MS. They would like to force you to upgrade your personal word to work at home. If it wasn't for Good old Corel and WP8 which doesn't have older version file compatability problems MS would have gotten away with this one. It's funny when it was released all the so call experts ranted and raved about how good Word97 was. If it wasn't for Corels competition and superior product the MS consumers would have got hosed on the old Word. So all you MS old product owners better thank Corel for that one. I'm sure Dr. Cowpland would rather have you MS supporters upgrade to WP8 than send him a thank you.
So how is Corel going to unentrench Ofice 97.
Guess what the good doctor and thats not you again has stated before. I don't remember the exact quote but basically he is counting on Java to give Corel the edge it needs to chip away at your previous statement.
IMHO the Network can be the computer and the user will use a browser or what ever to access there desired applications. Of course this will not happen over night. If Corel can beat MS out the door this gives them an advantage. Also poor old MS will have to compete on a fair and level playing field. I've posted in the old thread why MS has a unfair advantage owning the OS.
I've posted most of this before on the old thread but I guess I can post it again just in case I've missed something. Why do I think the Network will be the computer in the future. And very soon in a office application near you.
1. Simple to operate. Average users doesn't care about using the OS 2. System cost are cheaper Hardware and software. 3. Little or no down time when Browser breaks just replace no software to load. 4 Software upgrade is easy. 5 program control (no games allowed we want work). 6 Flexible Can use the application from home, office, hotel, airplane, car. - common data base. 7 Bandwidth tripples every year. 8 They say Java application are more stable due to better Memory managemnet
9 Sun, IBM, Oracle can't all be wrong could they (don't believe the MS FUD if they would have thought of this you can bet they would be on board)
I hear the year 2000 is going to be a big problem for certain applications and this could offer a solution to the problem.
There is probably some more points but you get the point I hope.
Corel years ago made Corel Draw for Windows when there was no other applications for Windows. Guess what MS used for a demo. MS Draw -- wrong! Corel Draw. Look where Corel draw is today. Now if history tells us anything I would guess that if Corel gets chosen by Sun for their NC, this will be a big boast for future sales of Office Java. October is a long way away.
