Transferring Staff Salaries Equals Illegal Payment for Referrals

(Eli Research) The feds are telegraphing pediatricians and other physicians a clear message: Every financial relationship you have with potential referral sources could be a kickback that will land you in jail.

The feds indicted a Florida physician who allegedly permitted a clinical laboratory to pay his employees' salaries and equipment costs in exchange for patient referrals, the St. Petersburg Times reports. Dr. Fred Leslie became the latest physician to face fraud charges in a federal probe surrounding Clearwater Clinical Laboratory. Leslie allegedly collected more than $20,000 in improper payments from the lab.

According to the Times, Leslie denies any wrongdoing and says he did not believe he was violating the law when he accepted the payments.
