Editor Ken Presti reported that DSL vendors now offer so many different flavors of DSL that VARs may have a tough time deciding which option is best suited to their needs. Presti commented that of all DSL flavors, ADSL currently leads the league in popularity. He added that despite industry concerns about limitations of ADSL, "the string of
[ADSL] related announcements is a long one." Next week, Ariel Corp. will unveil Horizon, a turnkey solution supporting 18 ADSL subscribers in the central office. Amati Communications demonstrated live MPEG-2 DSL video streams at NetWorld+INTEROP earlier this month. Efficient Networks is expected to roll out modems and adapter cards at SuperComm
next week. Fujitsu announced the Speedport DSLAM (DSL access multiplexer) as well as ADSL and SDSL customer premises equipment. Along with Orckit Communications, Fujitsu is also expected to develop VDSL, or very high-bandwidth DSL, and plans for HDSL are in the works for 1998. The ADSL system from Fujitsu is priced at $2,000 per line for the entire system and is now available.
