Lug: What you just wrote is a most sorry excuse for what happened on Nov. 7 and the four weeks thereafter. For someone with a college education, you surprise me at times with your simplistic, party-line lines of argument. (No doubt, you also were among the first to e-mail all of your friends "The Map".) Fact: As best as we can tell, 540,000 more people voted for Gore than Bush. No speculation here; just fact.

If the popular vote is not important, then why not just have the state legislatures elect the president?

Hillary might be correct. The Electoral College might be dated. It may be time to throw it out. But again, I am not too concerned about the fact that the EC failed in this election. However, if same happens in '04 ...

There have been two particularly troubling elections in U.S. history: 1876 and 2000. In both cases, Republicans and agents of same party effectively "stole" the election from the American people. Hayes' administration was one of "nothing happening." I expect much the same will happen over the next four years.
