I enjoyed reading your analysis. I suspect Gore failed to address what you cited because both candidates were competing for a rather narrow class of swing voters. In other words, while some middle-class Democrats have moved away from the Democratic Party for the reasons you described, they can easily shift back to the Democratic Party in four years if the economy sours. On the other hand, it is the Republicans who face a larger task, namely, of reaching out to minorities. As the nation becomes less white, it will also become less Republican (California, New Mexico, for example). I don't see how GWB can attract more minorities without a necessary negative reaction from the right wing.

Re: Gore ... I think you may be right. I think if Gore had to do it all over again, he might have had more success trumpeting traditional Democratic issues rather than counter-punching Bush's platform point by point.
