Here's another one of mine, just to keep things rolling: I was hunting elk in North Idaho when I came across a set of fresh bear tracks in the snow. I followed them, just to see what was up. The tracks led to a big white pine -- and just stopped. I bent down and saw that the pine had a small cavity at ground level. It looked too small, but I looked into the cavity and saw black fur. Curious, I poked the fur with the muzzle of my rifle. The fur moved, turning completely around until I could see the beady brown eyes peering out at me. I poked again. This time there was a reaction, the bear swatted at my rifle barrel. That's when I backed off hoping that the poor fellow would not be too badly disturbed to resume his preparations for the winter sleep.
