veterans benefits are deferred compensation. That is really a stretch. Many of these benefits were not in existence when the individuals went into the service. They were awarded after the fact. I suspect I have struck a sore point with conservatives. Employment preferences for veterans are a form of affirmative action. With some conservatives, it is OK to discriminate in favor of groups like veterans but bad to discriminate in favor of groups who have suffered discrimination themselves. So far, nobody on this thread has really answered the argument. Affirmative action is just another way of leveling the playing field for people who deserve a chance to compete.
